Rory Stewart

Rory Stewart is the Brady Johnson Professor of Grand Strategy at Yale University, a former British cabinet minister and diplomat, and MP for Penrith and the Border region. His book "The Marches" and his BBC documentary film "Borderland" deal with the history of Cumbria. He currently teaches Grand Strategy at Yale University and is co-host of the podcast "The Rest Is Politics" with Alastair Campbell. Previously he was UK Secretary of State for International Development, Minister of State for Justice, Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for International Development (for Africa, the Middle East and Asia), Environment Secretary and Chairman of the Defence Committee in the House of Commons. After a brief spell as an infantry officer, he joined the UK diplomatic service, serving in Jakarta and as British representative in Montenegro during the Kosovo crisis. Since 2008 he has been Ryan Professor of Human Rights at the Harvard Kennedy School and Director of the Carr Centre for Human Rights Policy.
